History

History of Financial Ice Hockey Federation and Financial World Cup

The Financial Ice Hockey Federation was created in New York 2003 by the Stockholm, Helsinki and Wall Street Teams

The Chairman is Per-Erik Holmström.

The Financial World Cup has been played 11 years, in cities like New York, London, Beijing, Stockholm, Helsinki, Riga, Reykjavik, Gothenburg, 8 years is counted as official.

The Background to the development of the federation was unofficial games between the Helsinki and Stockholm Markets, started 1999 and 2000. During 2001 the games was for the first time extended with games against the Wall Street Market, in New York 2001 and the first Official World Cup was played in Stockholm and Helsinki 2002. During the creation year 2003, the Stockholm Team put up the pace for this Business and Hockey Federation by doing the Global Hockey Tour. The Global Hockey Tour took just 8 Days and the Stockholm Team played 8 games during the Tour. The games were played in Helsinki, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Toronto and then The World Cup in New York.

Financial World Cup History, after a couple of years with unofficial games between the markets, with Petri Vuontela on the Helsinki Team as one of the pioneers and winners, the first World Cup was arranged in Stockholm and Helsinki 2002. The Tournament was held in two days with one day in Helsinki and one day in Stockholm, where the boat Silja Line with Kariokee and Diggiloo, took the players between the countries. The Stockholm Team, led by Per-Erik Holmström, won the title after a dramatic end against the Helsinki Team.

2003 in New Jersey New York The Wall Street Team, led by Jeffrey Frank, took back the title after a very tuff competition and became Champions in there home city. This year just 9 Finnish players came back after a shocking first defeat and finished second after a trip to Bada Bing. It was an important year in many ways for the future with Global Hockey Tour, Financial Ice Hockey Federation creation and for the first time it was a Canadian team there, who lost all games by +10.

2004 in Alexander Palace, London The tournament went back to Europe and London. The Arena Alexander Palace who originally was built for the famous Ice Skater John Curry and also are known for hosting prisoners during the World War Two became the home for tournament. This year the Stockholm team, led by Per-Erik Holmstrom, took back the title after a legendary game against the Helsinki Team, who halfway in the final game led by 2-1. The Finnish Team also had a counterattack in the inside of the post just before the Swedes came back and changed the game to victory.

2005 was the Tournament of Viesturs Koziols in Riga. Viesturs totally dominated the tournament. He created our symbol, marketed the tournament in media and of course Riga won it. Viesturs really showed us how great Riga was. On ice we met some players that played World Cup later that year. Nightlife and Kariokee reached a new level and we will forever remember the Riga Aero planes.

2006 Reykjavik took Asta and Brad into the History. We took the Tournament halfway back to America and Vikings city Reykjavik was given a glimpse of real Ice Hockey players. The former CEO of NHL Europe Brad Kwong brought a Team from Canada, who played under the Toronto Flag. Brads Team, with a glimpse of NHL, won the Tournament and restored the reputation of Canada as a leading hockey nation but the Icelandic lady organizer, Asta, will forever be remember for a superb tournament, on as well as off ice.

2007 the Financial World Cup was clinched together with the Oldtimer World Cup in Gothenburg, led by IIHF Björn Åberg, who also is the oldest player in the Financial World Cup together with Owe Andersson in the Stockholm Team. The Tournament started with real scandal when the Russia team first claimed “appearance money”. After negotiations they promised to stay and play all games but after the payment and first chocking defeat they never came back again and they also stole some equipment. The Asia Team, built on Asian players and people from the Nordic Vikings organization, led by Shin Yahata Larsson, first Asian Player in Hall of Fame, was a sensation and won the first ever Asian Hockey medal, but The Stockholm Team, led this time by Mats Hederos, get back on top and took the title after a dramatic last game and final over the Asia Financial Team.

2008 the Tournament will move to Beijing, and the Olympic City. The Stockholm Team won the Tournament played in nighttimes due to problem with Ice in Beijing. A combined Team with players from all Teams then visited Kunming for exhibition games. Some players had some difficulties finding their way in Beijing and Kunming but finally all players went back to Beijing to play a final game in Hosa Cup and defeated New Zeeland National Team in Hosa Skating Center with 5-1

2009 The Tournament in Zurich was cancelled and after some years with no host the tournament is back in Stockholm 2012

2012 The Tournament comeback in Stockholm and it will now follow the real Ice Hockey World Cup. The new Oslo team led by Joachim Tangen takes the Victory after playing both with style and good friendship, and in the sung "Seiern är vår" at the famous Cafe Opera

2013 The Tournament was held in Stockholm again with Moscow as the Champions, after Team Asia won the series. Also the first person in the hall of fame was voted in The Suonperä twins, with soft hands and Anders Westerlund, Finans Inspektionen.

2014 Due to the situation in Russia the tournament was cancelled and after some attempts to move it to Oslo it was cancelled in the end. Also 2015 in Helsinki was cancelled but this year Helsinki has again sent out the invitations to 7 April and Helsinki 2017, arranged by the Slow Motion Team and the Suonperäs soft hands.......
